Purpose
To increase mutual understanding by reporting on:
- 1) How I've been working on becoming a better human being and how I might improve those efforts.
- 2) How I've been engaged in community service to help individuals improve their lives and how I might improve those efforts.
- 3) How I've been involved in political action and how I might improve those efforts.
Methods
Once a month, a group of 8-14 people shares a meal together.
During dinner, if need be, decisions are made concerning future activities.
After dinner, the group conducts a 90-minute support group.
Each participant agrees to keep confidential information that is shared during the session.
The group forms a circle and sits in silence for five minutes. Each person utilizes the silence however he or she chooses, whether in reflection, meditation, prayer, relaxation, or whatever.
Each person then reports for 6-10 minutes on the three issues identified above under "Purpose." (The time limit depends on the number of participants; each person has an equal share of the 90 minutes.)
There are no interruptions, questions, or comments.
After everyone has reported, the session concludes with five minutes of silence.
A timekeeper uses a countdown watch and/or some other quiet device to signal when time limits have expired.
NOTES:
- Efforts to solve problems or resolve conflicts will be undertaken later.
- Suggestions, advice, and helpful information will be offered later.
- Efforts to engage in deeper processes of personal change will be undertaken later.
- These sessions merely aim to:
- increase mutual understanding.
- foster personal growth and self-discipline by addressing key issues regularly.
