Progressive Parties

Purpose:
To celebrate life, build a sense of community, and increase understanding of current issues.

Methods:

  • A Progressive Party is held in the evening on the same day each week at a different community center, preferably at centers that regularly display visual art or that can do so for this occasion.
  • Each event has a similar format, with each community center determining the specifics for its event.
  • The event begins with a pot luck dinner.
  • Following dinner, for about 90 minutes, there is live music, singing, poetry, a 10-minute talk on current events, and other cultural presentations. Care is taken to assure quality presentations that will engage the audience.
  • A dance party with live and/or recorded music follows these presentations. Partly to encourage inter-generational participation, the dancing might begin with simple folk dances or other "coordinated dancing" led by an instructor.
