I'm 50, and live in Pittsburgh. I used to be an agricultural research chemist. I have spent a lot of time developing materials and methods to help people with self-change/world-change. I had actually developed a small group program with similar goals to what Wade envisions. They were called Goal and Growth Groups. I also did something similar using a game format. Four teams of 5-7 people played a game for seven weeks called Mission Ball. They got points for stretches in personal goals, increasing personal capacity (skills, time, health), empowering others, and making the world better. I also did a small growth community program for three months call Climb Today's Mountain. Currently I'm working (and struggling) on a nonpartisan voter education program, called Proof Through the Night. I have a lot of materials on the web:

Fellowship of the Dream.Org This has a membership steps page and other pages that might be useful for models and ideas. MissionBall.OrgClimbTodaysMountain.Org (see the home page for the format, starting a group, and optional prep. pages)
All-around.org FYI
ProofThroughTheNight.Org FYI
MightyPlan.Org (an online book, with a similar goal as Wade's Global Transformation)

Personally, I am very troubled about the state of the world. I think that a movement of people making lifestyle changes that include political action, personal growth, ecological lifestyle changes is critical to our long-term security and survival. Much of my writing in Mighty Plan has to do with how potent a chain reaction of empowerment and support would be, and ways to get beyond people's doubts and reservations.
