Circles of Compassion

These Circles would consist of Charter Supporters who commit to self-development, community service, political action, and mutual support. They would meet at least monthly to share a meal, enjoy each other’s fellowship, conduct a semi-formal support group, and engage in planning as needed. Charter supporters would invite friends, relatives, coworkers, and members of their community who affirm the principles of the Charter to participate in these Circles. Charter supporters in Rochester, Montreal, and Princeton have already begun organizing such Circles.

On-going commitment to self-development would be a crucial component of this activism. The commitment to community service and political action might consist of only two hours a month by each member. The support group could consist of members reporting on their efforts with regard to self-development, community service, and political action – and perhaps engaging in some discussion concerning those reports. Each session could begin with a few minutes of silence during which members could pray, meditate, reflect, or relax, according to their respective beliefs.

These support groups would not focus on conflict resolution, problem solving, or therapy. Rather, merely by reporting and listening closely to one another, participants would get to know each other more fully and benefit from the increased self-knowledge that can result from verbalizing thoughts and feelings. Moreover, knowing that one would be asked to report on these matters would remind members to pay attention to their commitment during the month and would encourage them to act on their commitment.

Each of these circles could select one or two representatives to communicate with representatives from other circles in a Network, so they could share ideas and encouragement and perhaps organize occasional regional gatherings.

We believe these circles could enrich our social life, spread awareness of the Charter, and help build a movement behind the Charter, all while promoting democratic structures built around mutual respect and understanding.
