Shortly after I began my process of re-evaluating the progressive movement, Eva Paterson and Aileen Hernandez collaborated with me on developing what has become the proposal for Community Dialogues with Elected Officials. Howard Zinn provided me with unsolicited praise for an early version of the vision statement that now constitutes Chapter Two. Twenty or so members of the Strategy Workshop contributed important input, both in meetings and online. Forty of so participants in the Reaching Beyond the Choir Project helped me clarify my thinking on key points. Scores of people have responded to various questionnaires. A stone circles retreat helped me resolve my guilt about partially pulling up my roots in San Francisco. Penn Garvin, Rhoda Norman, William Holmes, and others gave me extensive feedback on Toward Peace: A Campaign for American Values, a booklet that was the precursor to this book. Wilson Riles gave me strong, heartfelt support and encouragement repeatedly. John Vasconcellos helped clarify my understanding of the role that culture plays in the social system. My agent, Michael Larsen, has continued to tell me to persevere. Bernard Weiner gave me valuable insights and constructive criticism. Morley Glicken got me started by offering to co-author a book. CommonDreams.org boosted my confidence by publishing several articles. The folks at Global MindShift provided thought-provoking stimulation. Glenda Hope, Don Goldmacher, and David and Jan Hartsough have been pillars of support. And, in response to my inquiries, occasional encouraging words from nationally prominent people like Van Jones, Paul Roeb, Julianne Malveaux, Ajahn Amaro, Kathy Kelly, Larry Bensky, Roma Guy, Taj James, Tim Carpenter, Michael Albert, Joan Blades, Karen Dolan, George Lakey, Michael Lerner, Claudia Horwitz, and Bill Aal assured me that I was on a path that was at least somewhat sensible. Anne Kane contributed proofreading. All of this support was very valuable.

Of particular assistance during the last year has been Raritan: A Quarterly Review. Edited by Jackson Lears, who writes occasionally for The Nation, this publication has illuminated a number of key issues concerning my basic worldview. With its solid intellectual foundation, Raritan has reassured me that my instincts are rational.

My friends in Mexico, by sharing with me some of their lives, hearing me out from time to time, and participating in some experiments with open dialogue, have expanded my perspective beyond “gringo land” and given me a solid base during my months of concentrated writing. And Carlos Gayou designed the cover, which I love.

Most important, however, have been my oldest, closest, surviving friends, Leonard Frank, who leads by example, Richard Gross, who leads with significant insights, Brandon Faloona, who carries the flame for the next generation, and my sister, Mary Hudson, whose multi-faceted intelligence is rock solid.
